Gavin Taylor was born in Sussex/Great Britain. He studied Oboe and Piano
privately while he was at school. After changing to voice he studied first with
Roderick Earle, then at the Royal Northern College of Music with Ryland
Davies, and subsequently in Manchester with Robert Alderson. After
graduating Gavin sang with various companies and festivals in the U.K.
including Scottish Opera, English Touring Opera, Clonter Opera and Welsh
National Opera. Gavin has been based in Germany since 1999 and has also
sung for several of the houses there including Wiesbaden, Flensburg,
Magdeburg, Cottbus, Ludwigshafen, Würzburg, Bremerhaven and Kiel. Gavin
also sang in Switzerland, Italy, France, The Netherlands and the U.S.A.
Gavin’s repetoire covers a wide range, from roles such as Don Giovanni,
Escamillo and Scarpia through to the more modern with Prinz Homburg,
Tarquinius and Hector in George Antheil’s Transatlantic.
In addition to his operatic work Gavin has a busy career on the concert
platform, and his repetoire encompasses works from Brahms Requiem,
Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Handels oratorios. Gavin has sung in concert halls
as diverse as the Philarmonie (Berlin), C.P.E.Bach Konzerthalle, Liverpool
Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Gavin has taken part in several masterclasses by renowned singers, these
include Sherrill Milnes, Francisco Araiza, Fedora Barbieri, Chris Merritt and
Guiseppe Taddei. 
    
Gavin's passed seasons were busy. He sang in several new productions:
Mahagonny in Detmold, Carmen in Hagen, Sweeney Todd in Flensburg and
Street Scene in Aachen. He made his debut at the Komische Oper Berlin
Hans Zenders Don Quichote and in addition to Marcello in Boheme in
Schwerin and Don Giovanni in Brandenburg, he sang Maxwell-Davies' St.
Magnus at the Festival Carinthischer Sommer, followed by Bim in Heinz
Holligers Beckett-opera What, Where for the Zeitgenössiche Oper Berlin as
well as Jingle Bells Show at the Friedrichatstadtpalast, a world premiere at
the Aspekte Festival in Salzburg, followed by taking part in the 2006
production with Placido Domingo of Cyrano de Bergerac at Covent Garden in
London.
2007 and 2008 include Samson and Dalilah at the Philharmonie Berlin, as
well as guest roles in Gera (Tosca), Schwerin (La Boheme), Salzburg (Albert
Herring) and a new production of Rigoletto in Hildesheim, La Boheme in
Norhausen, Carmen in Kiel and the worldpremiere production of Lazarus
(Christobal Halffter) at the Opernhaus Kiel, a concert with Cole Porter and
Gerschwin songs at the Komische Oper Berlin, Escamillo in Carmen in
Hannover und Melot in Tristan und Isolde in Bielefeld. Future plans include
new Productions of Don Giovanni and Les contes d'Hoffmann.
