Paul McGrath trained at the National Opera Studio, London, and was
awarded the prestigious conducting Fellowship to the Royal Northern College
of Music, Manchester.  After working as a repetiteur - notably at the Royal
Opera House, Covent Garden, where he also assisted Sir George Solti - he
made his professional début conducting Donizetti’s L’Ajo nell’imbarazzo at the
Batignano Festival, Italy, to which he returned to conduct John Caird’s
production of Mozart’s Zaïde.
Paul McGrath has a repertoire of more than 35 operas and music theatre
works.  Notable amongst his European engagements are: the mainland
European première of Jonathan Dove’s Flight for De Vlaamse Opera; the
World Première of Jonathan Dove’s Siren Song for Almeida Opera, La
Perichole for the Theater Basel; Orpheus in the Underworld and Die
Zauberflote for Opera North; and Consolations of Scholarship (Judith Weir)
and the World Première of Julian Grant’s Jump into my Sack for
Mecklenburgh Opera.
Paul McGrath made his BBC Proms début in the summer of 1997 conducting
Deborah Warner’s staging of Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc.
Further engagements include: La Cenerentola, Rigoletto, The Pearl Fishers,
Cosi fan Tutte, Manon, The Daughter of the Regiment and Carmen for English
Touring Opera; The Sorcerer’s Daughter (Ferrero) for the Brighton Festival;
and Sonnambula for Castleward Opera, Northern Ireland.
In 1995 Paul McGrath was appointed Associate Conductor to the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom his wide-ranging repertoire has
included: Das Lied von der Erde; Verdi Four Sacred Pieces; Tchaikovsky
Symphony no 6; Berlioz Les Nuits d’Eté; and Sibelius Symphony no 2.
Paul McGrath has an enduring connection with the renowned British
composer Michael Nyman.  He conducted the British premieres of both Man
and Boy: Dada and Love Counts at the Almeida Theatre, and further
conducted the Italian premiere of Love Counts in Modena.  Both operas were
subsequently recorded at Abbey Road Studios and released on the MNR
label.
Future engagements include Die Zauberflote with English Touring Opera.
Maestro McGrath is currently Music Director of the University of Warwick.
